Music Therapist and Certified Therapeutic Musician
What’s the difference?
Music Therapists intentionally use music to accomplish a defined goal. Therapeutic Musicians use music in a slightly different way, supporting patients in the moment during a difficult situation.
As both a Music Therapist and a Therapeutic Musician, I have seen the power of music!
-I have witnessed persons come out of a long-term coma during music therapy sessions.
-I have seen people unable to speak learn to communicate again by singing.
-I have watched patients with dementia who cannot remember their own
name know every word of every verse to familiar songs.
-I have felt the stressful atmosphere in a hospital room change to one of calm
as a person’s heart rate and blood pressure return to normal during a therapeutic music session.
-Music can “awaken” Alzheimer’s patients, bridging past and present when
tapping into music from their youth.
-Music can be a step toward restoring wholeness.
"Music therapy can make the difference between withdrawal and awareness, between isolation and interaction, between chronic pain and comfort -- between demoralization and dignity."
- Barbara Crowe
(Past President of National Association for Music Therapy)
